Mass loss and orbital period decrease in detached chromospherically active binaries

چکیده
The secular evolution of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), the systemic mass (M = M1+M2) and the orbital period of 114 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) were investigated after determining the kinematical ages of the sub-samples which were set according to OAM bins. OAMs, systemic masses and orbital periods were shown to be decreasing by the kinematical ages. The first order decreasing rates of OAM, systemic mass and orbital period have been determined as J̇ = 3.48 × 10 yr per systemic OAM, Ṁ = 1.30 × 10 yr per systemic mass and Ṗ = 3.96 × 10 yr per orbital period respectively from the kinematical ages. The ratio of d log J/d logM = 2.68, which were derived from the kinematics of the present sample, implies that there must be a mechanism which amplifies the angular momentum loss Ā = 2.68 times in comparison to isotropic angular momentum loss of hypothetical isotropic wind from the components. It has been shown that simple isotropic mass loss from the surface of a component or both components would increase the orbital period.

Kinematics of the chromospherically active binaries and evidence of an orbital period decrease in binary evolution
Kinematics of 237 Chromospherically Active Binaries (CAB) were studied. The sample is heterogeneous with different orbits and physically different components from F to M spectral type main sequence stars to G and K giants and super giants. The computed U , V , W space velocities indicate the sample is also heterogeneous in the velocity space. That is, both kinematically younger and older system...

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: OO Aql, CC Com, V345 Gem, XY Leo, AM Leo, V1010 Oph, V2612 Oph, XX Sex, W UMa, and XY UMa. Most of these binaries have been observed spectroscopically before, but our data are of higher quality and consistency than in the previous studies. While most of the stud...
متن کاملThe bifurcation periods in low - mass X - ray binaries : the effect of magnetic braking and mass loss
The bifurcation period in low-mass X-ray binaries is the initial orbital period which separates the formation of converging systems (which evolve with decreasing orbital periods until the donor becomes degenerate) from the diverging systems (which evolve with increasing orbital periods until the donor star loses its envelope and a wide detached binary is formed). We calculate systematically the...

The observations of W UMa type stars show a well-defined short-period limit of 0.22 d, which is equivalent to a lower mass limit of approximately 1 M ⊙ for the total binary mass. It is currently believed that cool contact binaries are formed from detached binaries losing angular momentum (AM) via a magnetized wind. Orbital evolution of detached binaries with various component masses was followe...
